Hovercraft Balloon – The Science of Friction

Friction is a force that we are so used to, we barely think about it. This is a fun and simple activity to do with your students. You will reduce the friction force between the CD and the floor, and watch how fast the CD will move! It’s really cool!

Materials:
  • Balloon
  • Old CD (that you no longer want)
  • Squeeze bottle top (from dish soap or sports drinks)
  • Glue gun and glue
Procedure:
  1. Using the glue gun, glue the squeeze bottle top onto the middle of the CD. Use enough glue so that there are no air holes.
  2. Blow up balloon.
  3. Place opening of the balloon on the top.
  4. Let go of balloon so that air comes out under the CD.
  5. Give the CD a little push.
  6. You have made a hovercraft!
