Transpiration Activity – leaves releasing water

Transpiration is the process by which plants release water into the atmosphere through their leaves. You can see this process with this simple activity that gives incredible results! And the only material needed is a zipper baggy. Easy peesy.

Procedure:

  1. Zip a dry baggie around a few leaves of a tree.
  2. Wait a few hours…
  3. Go back and remove baggie. You will be amazed how much water was produced by the leaves!

Go further:

  • Put the baggies on different species of trees and compare the results.
  • Measure the output of water
  • Compare the results on days with different weather (sunny vs cloudy, cold vs. hot)
